Welcome to another edition of the FAQ Series where we expand on commonly asked CBD-related questions from our growing community. One of the things we are asked frequently and have been from the very beginning of Dr. Ed® is ‘When is the best time to take CBD’.

Once again, the variable nature of CBD and the different ways that people respond mean one fixed time is not appropriate for everyone. However, most CBD users choose to take CBD either 2 times (morning and evening) or 3 times a day (morning, noon and evening). The effects of CBD can last from anywhere from 3-5 hours so using CBD 3 times a day is a good method to ensure you are ‘topped up’ throughout the day. Ultimately the best time to take CBD is the time that works for you. Always remember that using CBD is a personal experience and can take a fair bit of experimentation to get right. Next, we will break down WHY the times can vary and what you can do to identify the best dosing time.

The Effects of CBD Tend to be Personal

While there are a set of common and general effects that CBD produces, the rate of effect and magnitude of effect can vary to person to person. There are MANY factors that can influence the effects of CBD that differ between individuals including age, weight, metabolic health, physical activity and the use of other medications. Innate differences in our endocannabinoid systems can also lead to differing outcomes. For example, while CBD can improve sleep quality and stability for many people, others find that CBD actually increases alertness – there is typically no way to determine how someone will react until they try it. The best place to start is to determine how CBD makes you feel; pay close attention to energy levels, your mood and general reaction to stressful situations. Once you know how CBD affects you, dosing schedules are slightly easier to determine. If CBD produces relaxing effects then it can be appropriately used throughout the day; however, if CBD is increasing your energy and alertness you probably don’t want to be using it in the evening in case of sleep disruption but using it in the morning would be very beneficial.

It is common for users to group together products that produce different effects for them which they can use at different points in the day. For example, many users use our ENERGY oil or capsules in the morning and turn to our CALM oil or REST capsules in the evening.

    Other Cannabinoids and Terpenes

Both full and broad-spectrum CBD products contain a wealth of cannabinoids and terpenes which interact in numerous ways and may boost the inherent effects of CBD whilst producing psychological and physiological effects of their own. This combined effect can be relaxing or energising depending on the specific blend of cannabinoids and terpenes. For example, the terpene myrcene, found in abundance in our CALM oil, produces relaxing effects hence its inclusion in a calming product. Something else to bear in mind is the amount of CBD you are consuming per day. Some users report that lower concentrations of CBD are more likely to produce uplifting effects whereas higher doses may promote better sleep. Again, this may vary for you as an individual.

    Other points

–>If you feel the effects of sublingual drops ‘wearing off’ the topping up with a higher dose capsule may be beneficial.

–>Sleep issues are common and many turn to CBD and other cannabinoids to help. Using higher dose CBD products like our REST capsules and using CBD mainly in the evening could be an option worth exploring.

    The Bottom Line

Just how there is no single ‘best product’ for everyone, there is no fixed time that works universally for everyone. Your physiology as well as the make-up of your product and dose can all effect the eventual result and experimentation is to be encouraged. Keep a dosing diary! It really helps to keep track of what is working and what isn’t and will help you create the ideal dosing schedule.
