    Coronaviruses are a diverse group of viruses that cause disease in both birds and mammals. In humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections (throat, lungs etc) that are usually mild such as cases of the common cold but rarer forms can evolve. COVID-19, currently spreading across the globe, is an example of a mutated coronavirus. There are currently no specific treatments for COVID-19 and anti-viral therapies have not been developed. We have written this post in response to the rapid spread of COVID-19 across much of central Europe including Italy, Spain and the UK. As each country is tackling this issue in their own way, it is impossible to know the true infection rate and thus mortality rate of this virus. Suffice to say, despite many claiming this is similar to seasonal flu, all the available data is telling us this is not the case and that COVID-19 is a much more serious threat overall. However, this does not mean we should panic. The best thing we can do is look at the evidence, devise strategies to limit spread and exposure, support each other and our brave health workers and retain that stiff upper lip that all brits are born with. What we shouldn’t do, is panic buy toilet roll and stockpile supplies that we should be sharing. The most at-risk in our society need our support and right now, as with most outbreaks, at risk groups include:

    –>Those over 70

    –>Individuals with compromised immune systems

    –> Pregnant women

    –>Individuals with other serious health complaints i.e. advanced diabetes, cancer

    Remember, the vast majority of people recover fully from COVID-19 and many do not even display symptoms and this is precisely why it is spreading so far because people do not know they are ill and spreading the disease. Much like with vaccinations, it is up to the fit and healthy to make smart decisions now that will protect those who need it most.

    UPDATE: WE ARE NOW IN LOCKDOWN 

    Aside from ‘key’ workers which includes all NHS workers as well as workers involved in waste, utilities and transport and critical construction, everyone else is on lockdown. That means unless you have an INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT reason to leave the house, you shouldn’t. If you are an office worker and just prefer working in the office that is NOT a reason to leave your home and go into work. Lots of people are still letting the team down – stop being selfish and do your god damn part. 

     

    Stay at home to stop coronavirus spreading

    Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

    You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

    • shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
    • one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
    • any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
    • travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

     

    If you have symptoms or need medical help

    If you need medical help for any reason, do not go to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

    If you have symptoms of coronavirus (a high temperature or a new continuous cough), use the 111 coronavirus service.

    If you need help or advice not related to coronavirus:

    • for health information and advice, use the NHS website or your GP surgery website
    • for urgent medical help, use the NHS 111 online service – only call 111 if you’re unable to get help online
    • for life-threatening emergencies, call 999 for an ambulance

    Specific pregnancy advice:

    If you’re pregnant and worried about coronavirus, you can get advice about coronavirus and pregnancy from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

     

    Look after your wellbeing

    To help yourself stay well while you’re at home:

    • stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or on social media
    • try to keep yourself busy – you could try activities like cooking, reading, online learning and watching films
    • do light exercise at home, or outside once a day

    How to Avoid and Limit Spread of COVID-19

    Do:

    • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
    • always wash your hands when you get home or into work
    • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
    • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
    • put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards
    • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwellDo not:
    • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
    • go to your GP or hospital if you have not been asked to do so

     

    Coronavirus and CBD

    Have you noticed a sharp rise in individuals and businesses advertising and selling face-masks recently? Face masks, the quality of which renders them entirely ineffective. We have even seen people trying to bulk sell toilet paper and kitchen roll on social media and LinkedIn. We have a special word for these sorts of people not appropriate for this forum. Unfortunately the more unscrupulous CBD brands, of which there are many (although they are luckily starting to dwindle) are taking this viral outbreak as an opportunity to sell sub-par products to scared consumers. This includes standard CBD oils as well as low-alcohol and antibacterial  hand gels (very ineffective against viruses) with very low levels of CBD infused. We will stop short of naming specific companies but we are incredibly unimpressed with this behaviour.  There is absolutely no evidence that using CBD will help specifically with coronavirus infections. There is evidence that CBD can be used to support good mental health and many aspects of physical health but it is not curative and will not protect you from COVID-19. By all means continue to experiment with new CBD products and continue to use CBD to support your health but please do not be drawn in by fancy graphics and adverts online claiming CBD will help with COVID-19.
